ARCHAEOLOGY OF AN ERA

From 2005 to 2012, Roman Bezjak traveled repeatedly through Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as eastern Germany in search of buildings that could be considered exemplary of socialist modernism in architecture. The result is an extensive photographic body of work that visualizes a kind of archaeology of this modernism. What becomes apparent is an overwhelming, utopian vocabulary of forms as well as a seemingly global monotony in building practices. Bezjak’s photographs reveal the erosion of utopia and its integration into contemporary everyday life.

Von 2005 bis 2012 reiste Roman Bezjak wiederholt durch Ost- und Südosteuropa sowie den Osten Deutschlands auf der Suche nach Bauten, die als exemplarisch für eine sozialistische Moderne in der Architektur gelten können. Es entstand eine umfangreiche fotografische Arbeit, die eine Art Archäologie dieser Moderne visualisiert. Sichtbar wird ein überschießendes, utopisch besetztes Formenvokabular ebenso wie eine global anmutende Monotonie des Bauens. Bezjaks Fotografien offenbaren die Abnutzung der Utopie und ihre Ankunft im Alltag der Gegenwart.
